You can feel it in the vibration of your seat as you drive. It surges in your fingertips as you grip the steering wheel. This is a powerful machine and it could drive you through rain or shine, steep hill or rolling descent. You can rely on your 4×4 to get you through the worst driving conditions. But, you can also rely on it to help others out in their times of need along the roads of life.
How has the mighty 4×4 been the hero of the road? In more ways than you might at first expect.
Getting Unstuck
Mud is sticky; it is squelchy and worst of all it is very hard to get out of when you accidentally park your car in it. So, for people who purposely parked in it over the recent Glastonbury festival weekend it was a very brown nightmare. The weekend came to an end and they found themselves stranded at the festival. Perhaps this wouldn’t have been so bad if the musicians hadn’t already left! But, they had nothing to fear as a force of voluntary 4×4 drivers arrived on the scene to drag the stranded out of the mud. The music lovers were obviously super grateful and soon on their way home!
Snow Rescue
A 4×4 isn’t just a great rescue vehicle in the muddy weather; it also helps those in distress during the dreaded snow. During some of the worst snow in 2010 people were becoming stranded all over the country, but in one unfortunate incident, a 999 response ambulance was halted whilst on its way to help a pensioner in distress. Fortunately, a 4×4 driver was on hand and soon had the ambulance back on track to rescue the lady with a broken ankle. It was just a fall in this case, but the paramedics could have been on their way to a much more serious case. The power of the 4×4 means that whatever the situation, the life-saving members of the ambulance force would not have been delayed for long.
When it Rains…
…it pours. This is a phrase that has never been truer than the wet winter that just occurred. Those stranded in the flooding were relieved when the headlights of a 4×4 appeared to the rescue. The volunteer group 4×4 Assist estimated that they rescued almost one hundred motorists. Using their vehicles they provided transport, vehicle recovery and also emergency services for those in need during the flooding period. This also included delivering sandbags in order to try and combat the wet force of the burst river banks. They were real heroes for people in a time of great need.
