If you are a fan of fast 4x4s (who isn’t?) then you will doubtless be shuffling in your seat at the announcement of an even faster Range Rover Sport. Yes you heard it right; one of the most capable off-roaders in the world has been given a thorough working over to make it even faster. As one of the leading suppliers of 4×4 salvage we were excited last week when Land Rover put out an incredibly short teaser video that showed only a brief flash of the car.
This week those caring folk at Land Rover decided to give us a little more information on the most powerful model they have ever produced. Take a look at the video below to see exactly why they have built it and for a few shots of it in action at the notorious Nurburgring.
Performance
The headline figure is the fact that it will have 542 BHP; by anyone’s standards, that’s a lot! There are no statistics yet on acceleration, but bear in mind that a Range Rover Sport with 510 BHP gets to 62mph in only 5 seconds. The new car has an extra 32 BHP and the gearbox has reportedly been improved so expect the acceleration figure to drop to something more befitting a sports car than a family 4×4.
Handling
In the video we see a Land Rover test driver taking the new car around the famous corners of the ‘Green Hell’ with quite shocking alacrity. The anti-roll system has been tuned to allow much faster, harder cornering and far quicker change of direction. The chassis has also been tuned and stiffened to make sure that the car can cope with the added power.
Stopping
With all that extra power and tuning it is a fair bet to assume that the brakes will have gained a little extra beef also. The original brakes on the Range Rover Sport are made by specialists Brembo, so expect them to be bigger and better in this ultimate iteration. With the brakes completing a very exciting performance package you can expect this to be one of the very fastest 4x4s, if not the fastest when it arrives in 2015.
So if you are tearing your hair out trying to find a 4×4 that combines everyday usability with a serious turn of speed then look no further. The one factor that may stop you in your tracks is the price though; there is no official word on price yet but don’t expect to get much change from £80,000.
