Have you ever heard of Ken Block’s Gymkhana? No? Well, Gymkhana is a small subset of motorsport, and Ken Block remains the biggest proponent. If you head to their YouTube channel, you’ll notice their videos have racked views into the millions, and once you understand how the race/cars work, you’ll understand why.
The drivers have to be precise in their judgement, making split second decisions which could turn a race in their favour or turn their chances to dust – a statement which relates to all racing drivers but with Gymkhana, the drivers also have to execute flawless figure of eights, jumps and 360-degree turns.
There’s a lot of reliance on rear wheel driving in the sport.
Why do we bring this all up? Well, because in Germany, an intern with a marketing agency came up with the brilliant idea to create a tractor in the same light – a Gymfarmer if you like– and has used it to promote the supermarket chain, Edeka.
In the advert, we see a German farmer in a hurry with his apples so that he can get them to market on time. Naturally, this means smashing through barn doors, tearing it up across fields, scaring pedestrians, but also stopping for a hedgehog (which is always nice).
It seems this idea was somewhat inspired by an article written for Top Gear magazine in which a tractor was specifically modified so that it could drift and cruise in the fields.
The Swedish farmers took an incredibly worn 1956 Volvo BM Terrier tractor and strapped a 225bhp Volvo B21ET turbocharged engine to the front.
You might notice from the video that the vehicle near enough has a mind of its own, with no suspension, and makes very unique crop circles which probably aren’t far from the next UFO hoax.
It just goes to show that tractors can be an example of the coolest vehicles around at the moment, if they’re completely re-modified that is!
