Jaguar Land Rover has recently outlined its plans to create an electric version of the celebrated Range Rover Evoque. The project will be conducted in partnership alongside 11 other organisations and is expected to cost somewhere in the region of £13.6 million. The result will be a trio of prototype vehicles that will make use of a full range of electric technologies, and the final models are expected to be unveiled in 2015.
The decision to produce three separate vehicles was reached as a result of a new wave of carbon dioxide emission regulations that are set to come into fruition, and also in response to growing customer demand. This diverse solution will yield vehicles that possess hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrain technology, enabling a range of different capabilities including varying CO2 emissions and long distance ranges.
Part of the challenge has been to design a battery that is capable of powering an electric Evoque without substantially lowering its formidable specifications. The solution also has to be capable of being industrialised, and the result is likely to represent a significant innovation. Plans are already in place to manufacture a system that will allow the vehicle to replenish its energy as it brakes or turns, so the brand name certainly seems keen to pay close attention to the finest of details.
On top of the £4 million that Jaguar Land Rover is personally investing into this project, the firm has also unfurled the development of a new 30,000 square mile facility that will double the size of the company’s existing research team. This is a major undertaking that is likely to create 150 brand new jobs, and once again serves to outline the sheer scale of Jaguar Land Rover’s current levels of growth.
